BP 10 - What is Genre ?

Used to categorise different products that share similar features or characteristics. They are important because they help to quickly establish the differences between various different media forms. Helping to establish certain codes and conventions that film makers can follow in order to make their product look a certain way or to achieve a certain effect and attract a specific audience. They create expectations and familiarity in audiences, which leads audiences to develop personal tastes around the genre.

Genre - specific type or category of music, film or writing
Sub-Genre - a subdivision of a genre e.g RomCom
Hybrid genre - blends themes and elements from two or more different genres
Codes and Conventions - codes are systems of signs, which create meaning - technical and symbolic. Conventions are typical things that are expected in a genre
Genre Tropes - common/overused themes or devices

Action -

These following stills are all from different genres, the elements and features of the image is what helps you to recognise the genre.
This still is an from the 'action' Genre. The relentless fighting stance of the characters provides the film with a certain energy worthy of watching, a joy to watch in the eyes of those who show in interest in this type of film.

( Lord of the Rings )

Comedy -

The tasteful humour of Jonah, Chris and Michael create a generally impressive comedic film, a film that I saw as hilarious saw the basic lives of the three high school students get turned on its head, as they face problems that entice the audience, engaging them in laughter, the ultimate intention of a comedic based film.

( Superbad )

Romance -

A different type of romance is an appropriate description, the film still possesses degrees of romance yet there is comedic references at times also. The photo emphasises this
( Friends with Benefits )
