IMPORTANCE OF SOUND IN FILM

Sound is key in film. It creates an atmosphere in a scene, can set the mood for the whole film, stirs up emotions in the audience. Without sound movies are bloody boring. Look at this example, or should I say listen?

HERE WE HAVE THE INTRO TO 'THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123'

When watched with sound the audience feels excited, engaged and enthralled. The heavy bass sounds create a sense of action and tension. The screeching of the train builds up a sense of anticipation. The dialogue between characters gives the story context and helps the audience understand what's going on

When watched without sound it feel like the longest 4 minutes of your life. It makes you feel like gauging out your eyeballs. The audience has no idea of what's going on, feels bored, disengaged and don't get a sense of the mood of the film (which is a gritty, modern, tense mood by the way)

George Lucas, the director of a very unknown, indie film 'Star Wars' (I doubt you've even heard of it) says that sound makes up 50% of a movie and I couldn't agree more
