MACRO ELEMENTS
From the title sequence of SE7EN we can tell that that the storyline of the film is an investigation of a murder or a crime. We can tell this from images like this:
This looks like someone giving their finger prints. This invokes the idea of a crime investigation in the audience
We can see a man sticking clippings of faces onto paper. Are they suspects? victims?
These two images give us an idea that the main plot of the film is a murder investigation
and that the main characters are the investigators and the murderer(s)
The two screenshots above suggest that the main characters are quite poor and come from a lower class social group. They use old, tatty books which suggests they cant afford new stationary.
MICRO ELEMENTS
SHOT TYPES
Screenshot 1) This part of the title sequence uses an extreme close up to draw focus to the fact that the main character is shaving parts of his skin off his finger. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable and sets the mood for the film
Screenshot 2) This part of the title sequence also uses an extreme close up. However, this time its of someone cutting a piece of film. This draws attention to the fact that he perosn is investigating something and gives the audience an idea of the storyline without giving away key plot points
Screenshot 3) This shot uses an extreme close up once again. It shows a photo of a lobotomy and this suggests that one of the characters is insane. This gives the audience something to think about and also draws them in to the film.
SOUND
The title sequence uses deep bass sounds to create a dramatic feel. It also uses screeching sounds to build tension and eerie music to create a sense of fear and mystery, All the sounds in the title sequence are non-diagetic. This means that they are all sounds that have been added in. The music gradually becomes more exciting which will mkae the audience feel excited and pumped up for the film
ORDER OF CREDITS
The credits that appear before the Title are:
1)An Arnlod Kopelson production
This appears first as he is the person that produced the film, his name appears the longest
2)A film by David Fincher
The directors name comes second as he is the person that made the majority of the film, his name is only up shortly
3)Brad Pitt
Actor that plays main character, his name appears in bright, bold letters and is on screen for a while
4)Morgan Freeman
Actor that plays supporting role, his name isn't shown in bold font and appears for slightly less time
5)SE7EN (small)
6)SE7EN (big)
Emphasises title, males it stand out and makes it memorable
NUMBER TWO IS SKYFALL
MACRO ELEMENTS
The title sequnce for Skyfall introduces the audience to the story of Skyfall without giving anything away. It starts off with Bond sinking in the ocean
This hints to the fact that he may be dead or dying. Creates a sense of mystery for the audience.
This scene of a journey through a graveyard provokes the audience to think that bond is dead
This final part of the journey graveyard sees the ocean water turn red. This gives connotations of blood and death. Once again reinforcing idea that bond is dead
We are introduced to this mystery woman. Along with Bond we can tell she is a very important character in the story as they draw a lot of focus onto her in this short, 4 second shot
MICRO ELEMENTS
SHOT TYPES
Unlike SE7EN, the title sequence for 'SKYFALL' uses a variety of shots.
Here there is a Long Shot which shows you the whole of Bond and introduces him to the audience.
Point of View (POV) shot makes the audience feel like they are seeing the film in Bonds perspective
Birds eye shot with a slight dutch-tilt shows that Bond is disorientated and confused
Mid shot of villain. Face is hidden and this creates a mystery for the audience. Who is the villain?
SOUND
There is no sound in the trailer apart from the song "Skyfall" by Adele. The lyrics say "let the sky fall and crumble". This suggests that Bond will die or something important will get destroyed
ORDER OF TITLES
1) Albert R. Broccoli's Eon Productions LTD. Presents
The Broccoli family have produced everybond film so they need to be featured right at the beginning of the sequence
2) Daniel Craig As
Actor that plays main character. His name appears for a good deal of time
3) As Ian Fleming's James Bond In
Ian Fleming wrote all the Bond books so his name needs to appear before the title of the film
4) SKYFALL
Title appears on big, bold letters with cool graphics that look a bit damged (fits theme of movie)
FINAL TITLE SEQUENCE IS SIN CITY
MACRO ELEMENTS
We can immediately see that the main theme of the film is death. We see a woman dying in man's hands
We can also see that the story may revolve around prostitution or lust which links it to the name 'Sin City'
We can also guess that this characyer will get killed at some point and that her death is a crucial part of the story
This title sequence dosent give anything away about the storyline if the film and leaves the audience guessing what the film is about (unless they are a fan of the graphic novel)
MICRO ELEMENTS
The use of mise-en-scene, in this case colour choice, gives the audience that there will be a lot of death and blood in this film. The only colour in this otherwise black and white film is red, the colour of blood. Red also has connotations of lust and passion. This hints at the films main plot
This establishing shot shows the film is set in New York. This is useful as it would make certain parts of the film make sense and gives the audience an idea of where the film is set
The title sequence is composed of many, many close ups that build tension and create suspense
SOUND
The sounds in the title sequence, like all the previous title sequences I have looked at, are all non-diagetic. The title sequence features music which is a cross between film noir jazz and rock with some sci-fi noises thrown in. This helps set the tone for the film as it basically a modern film noir/ thriller film.
ORDER OF TITLES
The first title we see is the name of the author of the graphic novel that the movie is based on. Under that is the title of the film 'SIN CITY'
After that, we are shown every actor in the film (A few of these are shown below)
They all get equal screen time which shows that there is no main character
We are then introduced to all the people that worked together to make the film. However it is in order of ascending hierarchy. It starts with the casting director and ends with the directors. This way you remember their names more.
