4 main categories of title sequences

Titles on a blank screen

  • historically most common
  • usually white font on black background, creates a good contrast
  • low budget
  • offers a simple way to provide information

Titles on still images
  • more elaborate than the previous one
  • title cards were developed, hand-drawn
  • incoperated visual aid
  • contrasting
  • credits started to get longer
  • more music, genre indicator
Title over moving images
  • incorperates moving images+music
  • usually no dialogue
  • sound effects
  • offers symbolism/metaphor/narrative
  • helps introduce tone+storyline
Title using animation or motion
  • late 1990's, these became more popular, mostly used today
  • title became more animate along with the film
  • requires a lot of editing+animating
My favourite type
My favourite type of sequence is the one using animation because it's more intricate and more attractive. I think it's mainly because I quite like animation films and series.
